01Welcome

Welcome to Lanterns ("the App", "we", "our", or "us").

Lanterns is built on one belief: the people you love, and the thoughts you carry about them, deserve a private and lasting home.

Voice recordings created in Lanterns are intended to remain on your device. We do not access, store, or process voice recordings on our servers as part of normal app operation.

We never sell your voice recordings, transcripts, memories, or personal content.

These Terms exist to help protect that promise — yours and ours.

Lanterns is a digital space where people can create and release lanterns carrying thoughts, emotions, memories, and moments connected to people they care about.

By accessing or using the app, you agree to these Terms and our Privacy Policy.

02Eligibility

You must be at least 18 years old to use Lanterns.

By accessing or using the app, you confirm that you are at least 18 years of age and legally capable of agreeing to these Terms. We do not knowingly collect or process personal data from users under the age of 18. If we become aware that a minor has accessed the app or provided personal data, we will take reasonable steps to delete such data and restrict further access. If you believe a minor has used Lanterns, please contact us at support@lanternsformemories.co.in.

Adult users may record and preserve memories involving the people they love, including their own children or minors in their care, where they have the right or authority to do so. Any such content is created and stored under the adult user's own responsibility, and the adult user is responsible for ensuring they have the appropriate consent or guardianship to record and preserve it.

03Your Content

Content created within Lanterns remains yours.

Voice recordings may be processed locally on the user's device to generate transcripts and support app functionality. We do not access, store, or process voice recordings on our servers as part of normal app operation.

Lanterns may collect and process limited analytics and operational information associated with pseudonymous identifiers, including feature usage, app interactions, lantern activity, word counts, emotion tags, subscription information, technical information, and similar operational metrics. Such information does not include the contents of voice recordings or transcripts. Lanterns may also generate aggregated and pseudonymised statistics derived from such information to understand usage patterns, improve the app, and share high-level statistics that do not identify individual users.

By using Lanterns, you grant us a limited, non-exclusive, royalty-free license to process pseudonymised analytics, operational metadata, and subscription-related information solely to the extent necessary to provide and improve app functionality. This does not include your voice recordings, transcripts, emotion tags, lantern content, or any information identifying the people your lanterns are connected to.

04Content & Conduct

Users are responsible for their use of Lanterns and for the content they create, store, or share through the app.

You agree not to use Lanterns to create, store, transmit, or distribute content that:

We may restrict, suspend, or terminate access to Lanterns if we reasonably believe these Terms have been violated.

To the extent permitted by law, users agree to be responsible for claims, losses, or damages arising from their violation of these Terms or misuse of the app.

Users agree to indemnify, defend, and hold harmless Lanterns and its founders, employees, and agents from any claims, damages, losses, liabilities, and expenses (including reasonable legal fees) arising from your use of the app, your content, or your violation of these Terms or applicable law.

05App Functionality, Storage & Analytics

Voice recordings may be processed locally on the user's device to generate transcripts. We do not access, store, or process voice recordings on our servers as part of normal app operation.

The quality, accuracy, availability, and performance of transcription may vary depending on device capabilities, operating system support, audio quality, language support, background noise, and other technical factors beyond our control.

Lanterns may store, process, analyze, transmit, and use emotion tags, pseudonymous user identifiers, analytics information, word counts, subscription information, technical information, and related metadata to support app functionality, subscriptions, analytics, product improvement, and future features. Lanterns does not access, read, store, or process the contents of voice recordings or transcripts on its servers as part of normal app operation.

Lanterns may collect limited technical, operational, and usage-related analytics to help improve app performance, reliability, stability, subscriptions, security, and feature experience. Such information may include app interactions, feature usage, pseudonymous user identifiers, device information, operating system information, crash reports, network-related information, general location information derived from technical data, and other usage patterns.

Pseudonymous user identifiers and related technical information may be stored locally on the user's device and may also be transmitted to or stored by services used to support analytics, subscriptions, app functionality, or related operational purposes.

We may provide backup, export, import, or restore functionality to help users transfer or recover app data. While we aim to make these features reliable, we do not guarantee that such processes will always be successful, error-free, or result in complete recovery of content. Users are encouraged to maintain copies of important backups before deleting or replacing existing app data.

Backups created, exported, transferred, stored, or shared by users may contain voice recordings, transcripts, emotion tags, and other content selected by the user. Lanterns may use encryption and other security measures designed to help protect locally stored data and backups; however, no method of storage, encryption, or transmission can be guaranteed completely secure. Users are solely responsible for the storage, security, transmission, sharing, and management of such backups once created or exported. Lanterns is not responsible for loss, disclosure, corruption, unauthorized access, or misuse of exported backup files outside the app.

Certain app features may vary based on device capabilities, operating system support, technical limitations, or future product updates.

Lanterns may integrate with or depend upon third party services including but not limited to Apple App Store, Google Play Store, and analytics providers. Such services are governed by their own terms and privacy policies, which users are encouraged to review. We are not responsible for the availability, accuracy, data practices, security, or conduct of any third party service. Use of third party services through or in connection with Lanterns is at the user's own risk.

We use PostHog for analytics purposes. PostHog may derive approximate location information from users' IP addresses using GeoIP technology. This information is pseudonymised and used solely for analytics and app improvement purposes. PostHog's privacy policy is available at https://posthog.com/privacy.

06Access & Usage

You are responsible for maintaining access to your device, backups, and app data.

We may restrict, suspend, modify, discontinue, or terminate access to Lanterns or certain features if:

We reserve the right to modify, improve, limit, suspend, or discontinue features, functionality, pricing, subscription plans, trial periods, promotional offers, or parts of the app experience at any time.

Pricing, offers, availability, and subscription terms may vary by country, region, platform, user segment, promotional campaign, or other business considerations.

Certain features may vary depending on device compatibility, operating system support, geographic availability, technical limitations, subscription status, or future product updates.

For clarity, except where required by law or in cases of misuse, abuse, or unlawful activity, any restriction, suspension, or discontinuation of features or access does not delete content you have already created and stored locally on your device. Locally stored content remains on your device under your control, subject to these Terms.

07Subscriptions & Purchases

Certain features, functionality, or experiences within Lanterns may require a subscription, purchase, trial period, or other form of paid access.

Pricing, billing cycles, trial periods, renewal terms, promotional offers, and available features will be presented before a purchase or subscription is activated.

Pricing, offers, subscription plans, eligibility, and available features may vary by country, region, platform, user segment, promotional campaign, or other business considerations.

By accepting these Terms and using Lanterns, users are assigned a default plan, access level, feature set, usage limit, or eligibility status determined by Lanterns at that time.

Subscriptions may automatically renew unless canceled through the platform used to purchase them, including the Apple App Store, Google Play Store, or other applicable payment providers.

When a free trial, promotional period, or paid subscription expires, users may lose access to creating new lanterns or other subscription-specific features. Existing lanterns, memories, transcripts, emotion tags, and previously created content will remain accessible to the user.

All purchases, billing, refunds, cancellations, and payment processing remain subject to the policies, terms, and procedures of the applicable platform or payment provider.

We reserve the right to modify subscription plans, pricing, included features, eligibility requirements, promotional offers, access conditions, feature availability, usage limits, and associated benefits at any time.

Available plans, features, limits, and associated benefits may change from time to time. Users may be offered the ability to select, change, upgrade, downgrade, or otherwise manage available plans or access levels through the app, where applicable.

If we materially change the pricing, benefits, or core terms of an active paid subscription, we will make reasonable efforts to provide advance notice. Such notice may be provided through the app, email, notifications, or other available communication methods. Unless a shorter period is required by law, operational necessity, or third-party platform requirements, we will generally aim to provide at least fourteen (14) days' notice before such changes take effect.

08Intellectual Property

Lanterns, including its name, branding, design, visual elements, animations, user interface, software, features, and related materials, is protected by applicable intellectual property, copyright, trademark, and other laws.

Except as permitted by law, users may not copy, reproduce, modify, distribute, reverse engineer, resell, or create derivative works from any part of Lanterns without prior written permission.

These Terms do not grant users any ownership rights in Lanterns or its intellectual property.

Content created by users remains subject to Section 3 of these Terms.

09Limitation of Liability

Lanterns is provided on an "as is" and "as available" basis.

While we aim to provide a reliable and thoughtful experience, we do not guarantee that Lanterns will always be available, uninterrupted, secure, error-free, or free from data loss.

To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law, we are not responsible for any loss of content, failed backups, failed exports, failed imports, incomplete restores, transcription errors, service interruptions, technical failures, device incompatibilities, subscription issues, or other damages arising from the use of or inability to use Lanterns.

Users acknowledge that Lanterns is intended to support personal memory keeping and reflection, and that interpretations, descriptions, summaries, classifications, contextual information, or other generated content may not always be accurate, complete, or reflective of actual events.

Generated descriptions, summaries, classifications, contextual information, or other derived content may include inferred, estimated, narrative, descriptive, or atmospheric language and may not reflect actual events, conditions, weather, locations, circumstances, or other factual details.

To the fullest extent permitted by law, our total liability relating to Lanterns shall not exceed the amount paid by the user, if any, for access to the app, except where such limitation is prohibited by applicable law.

We are not responsible for delays, interruptions, failures, or inability to provide Lanterns resulting from events beyond our reasonable control, including internet outages, app store disruptions, device failures, legal or regulatory actions, natural disasters, cyberattacks, or failures of third-party services.

During such events, our obligations under these Terms shall be suspended for the duration. We will make reasonable efforts to resume normal service as soon as practicable.

Lanterns makes no warranties, express or implied, including but not limited to implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, or accuracy. We do not warrant the accuracy of transcriptions, emotion tags, summaries, or any generated content. We are not responsible for the acts or failures of third-party services including app store platforms, analytics providers, or device operating systems.

10Changes to These Terms

We may update or modify these Terms from time to time to reflect changes to Lanterns, its features, legal requirements, business operations, pricing, subscriptions, or other related matters.

Updated Terms will become effective when published within the app, on our website, or through other reasonable means of notice.

Continued use of Lanterns after updated Terms become effective constitutes acceptance of the revised Terms.

For changes that materially affect user rights, obligations, privacy, or data processing practices, we may require users to review and accept updated Terms before continuing to use certain features or the app.

11Notifications & Communications

Lanterns may send notifications, reminders, service messages, subscription-related communications, or other app-related communications.

Certain notifications may be required for app functionality, account management, subscriptions, security, or operational purposes.

Users may manage notification preferences through available app settings or device settings, where applicable.

12Data Deletion Requests

Lanterns does not access, store, or process voice recordings on our servers as part of normal app operation.

Users may delete locally stored app data by uninstalling the app or using available in-app features.

If you wish to request deletion of analytics identifiers, subscription-related information, or other data we may hold in connection with app operations, including complete account deletion, you may contact us at support@lanternsformemories.co.in. We will make reasonable efforts to process such requests within 30 days, subject to legal, security, operational, or contractual requirements. We are not responsible for data contained in backups, exports, or files that have been saved, transferred, or stored outside the app by the user.

14Dispute Resolution

Before initiating any legal proceedings, users agree to first notify us of the dispute in writing at support@lanternsformemories.co.in and allow 30 days for good-faith resolution. If unresolved, both parties agree to attempt mediation before approaching courts. Only if mediation fails shall disputes be referred to the courts of Bengaluru, Karnataka, India.

15Governing Law & Jurisdiction

These Terms shall be governed by and interpreted in accordance with the laws of India.

Any disputes, claims, or legal proceedings not resolved under Section 14 shall be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of Bengaluru, Karnataka, India.

16General

If any provision of these Terms is found to be invalid, unlawful, or unenforceable, that provision shall be modified to the minimum extent necessary to make it enforceable, or severed if modification is not possible, without affecting the validity of the remaining provisions. These Terms constitute the entire agreement between you and Lanterns regarding your use of the app and supersede any prior agreements, representations, or understandings.
